Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC)
Maria’s TRU Story
Maria is a real patient and this is her TRU story. KEYTRUDA may not work for everyone.

Maria’s journey
“I chose to stay positive, because a positive attitude makes a great difference.”
– Maria’s strength in the face of TNBC
Maria has been compensated for her time.

An unexpected discovery
Maria has always been the strong one. A problem solver, a nurturer, a woman whose love for life radiates through every word she speaks. She has lived her life choosing joy—even during life’s toughest trials. One morning brought an unexpected challenge for Maria. While showering, she felt something unusual—a lump.
“I felt a ball on my right breast, and I was like, that’s kind of abnormal…I don’t remember that being there.”
- Maria, recalling the first sign and a feeling she couldn't ignore
Maria sensed something was wrong and quickly made an appointment with her doctor. Faced with delays in obtaining further testing, she took charge of her health and sought a second opinion at a breast center she had visited before for routine mammograms.
At the breast center, everything moved swiftly. Within days, she underwent an ultrasound, mammogram, and a biopsy. Soon after came the diagnosis: high-risk early-stage triple-negative breast cancer, or TNBC. It was overwhelming—but Maria found strength in her medical team.
A plan and a partnership
Maria’s oncologist approached her diagnosis with both clarity and compassion. He explained the urgency of TNBC—a fast-growing cancer—and recommended she start treatment before surgery. Ultimately, he recommended a treatment plan for her TNBC that included an immunotherapy, KEYTRUDA, used with chemotherapy before surgery, then alone after surgery. Maria and her doctor discussed the risks and benefits of the plan, and that treatment could last over a year.
Together, Maria’s care team created a treatment plan that was right for her. They didn’t just treat her—they partnered with her. Her oncologist and breast surgeon stayed in close coordination. Her nutritionist crafted a diet to support her recovery. Maria did her part remaining committed to her care and staying confident in the plan.

Fueled by love and support
Maria’s family and friends stood firmly by her side every step of the way. Her mother sat with her through every infusion session, offering quiet strength. Her fiancé lovingly prepared the special, healthy meals she needed during treatment. And her circle of friends showered her with care packages and constant encouragement.
“That made me feel like I’m loved, I’m appreciated. Like I need to fight this thing.”
- Maria, remembering how everyone’s support fueled her resolve
Resilience through the journey
During treatment, Maria and her team began to see the results they were hoping for. Treatment came with some side effects—hair loss, anemia, nausea—but Maria was able to stay on track. She shared the side effects with her care team, so they were able to support and monitor her.
When the time came for surgery, the surgeon gave her options. Maria chose a lumpectomy and reconstruction. Not long after, her doctor shared the news she had been hoping to hear.

Embracing the journey ahead
After surgery, Maria stayed on KEYTRUDA alone for the full course of treatment, just as prescribed. She never missed a scan or an appointment, and she continues to remain committed, returning for regular follow-up visits, in close partnership with her care team.
Her story is one of trust, advocacy, partnership, and resilience. Through every step, Maria found strength in science, trust in her care team, and the unwavering support of family and friends.
Experiences with KEYTRUDA differ among individuals. KEYTRUDA will not work for everyone, and it’s important to be informed about possible side effects. Always talk to your doctor or health care team if you have questions about your treatment.
